A Time for Sharing

Some of us have foolishly led our children to believe that they can have whatever they want even though we are tottering on financial destruction. Our kids really want and need quality time with us, there are lots of fun, inexpensive things we can do to bring more unity in our family. Now is the time to let the folk know that you exchange gifts with that you will be getting small tokens and finding time to spend with them rather than stressing your bank account. Homemade gifts, inviting friends over for spaghetti, attending a movie or inexpensive holiday events together are a few of the ways to have fun.

You will also feel a sense of reward by helping to serve the homeless at Thanksgiving, making Christmas boxes for needy children, sharing winter clothes that you no longer use with others, or inviting a new friend from church out for coffee. Our connection with other people is a major way to create a loving fun atmosphere rather than trying to buy our way happy which only drops us into depression when the bills roll in January.

Don't get caught up, your Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years should all be about thanking the only Begotten Son in your life who makes all things new. What are some of your ideas for making the holidays about giving God our worship, sharing His love with others and being a good steward.

Peace and Love

Making changes around holiday traditions can be unsettling, but often the outcomes are worth it. Sometimes we just get caught up in what we think others expect. (This morning I saw a report on a news show about who I ought to buy gifts for including the school bus driver, the tutor, and the nail technician. The reporter recommended cash for all, by the way).

Jesus is not just the reason for the season, but must also be the focus. Spending time with new church friends, skipping the shopping frenzy while pooling resources with other family members to help those less fortunate, and giving the gifts of hope, love, and encouragement are all ways I plan on "celebrating Christmas" this year.
